Medical career field civilians have been integral to Army medicine since its inception, performing all medical functions in the ​Army's early years and continually supporting its mission. The DoD medical transformation brought significant changes, and the Medical Career Field has adapted to emphasize readiness. A fundamental shift is a new focus on overall health and ​prevention, leading to emerging missions like Holistic Health and Fitness, the Integrated Prevention Advisory ​Group/Prevention Workforce, optimal human performance, and wellness services. This emphasis on health and prevention ​aims to improve resilience and readiness. The Medical career field will enhance support for the civilian workforce through ​proactive career development to meet these new challenges.
